What is special about Classic Ensemble Vienna concerts?
What makes the concerts of the Classic Ensemble Vienna so special is the unique atmosphere of St. Peter’s Church.
The first St. Peter’s Church on this site was built in the second half of the 4th century in the Roman camp of Vindobona, today’s Vienna, and is probably the oldest church in the city.
It was later replaced by a Romanesque church with a nave and two aisles. It is assumed that Emperor Charlemagne founded this church around 792, although this is not historically proven. What is certain, however, is that a church of St. Peter is mentioned in 1137 as part of the prehistory of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and that parish rights were to be transferred to it.
After a devastating fire in 1661, the old St. Peter’s Church only survived in makeshift repairs. After the plague year of 1679-1680, Emperor Leopold I decided to rebuild the church, as he had once sworn to do.
Today’s St. Peter’s Church was built between 1701 and 1733 according to the plans of Lucas von Hildebrandt and is the first domed building in Baroque Vienna. At this time, Vienna was already a densely built-up city, which is why the church was designed in a compact form with an oval interior, which nevertheless appears surprisingly spacious.
Following extensive renovation in 2004, St. Peter’s Church impresses with its magnificent interior full of golden stucco. It is also home to the Classic Ensemble Vienna, whose classical concerts are among the hidden highlights of Vienna’s cultural scene.
