Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio - Freedom, Fidelity and the Triumph of love over every obstacle.
This year, 2020, we mark the 250th birthday of a man who changed music forever: Ludwig van Beethoven.

Beethoven the man, the artist, the “Tondichter” as he called himself. A life full of passion, music, success, disappointments and of deafening silence. All of this drama and heart-rending catharsis heralded the eternal music of the Sturm und Drang movement.
Beethoven's only opera is a masterpiece, an apotheosis of his art. It is loved and known everywhere not only because of the transcending beauty of its music, but particularly because of the political implications of the story.

"Man is born free, and everywhere he lies in chains." wrote Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Beethoven's librettist, Joseph Sonnleithner, writes that Fidelio was not about politics at all, but about "wifely virtue" and fidelity. But it is also most definitely an opera about political oppression and enlightened principles triumphing over the threat of tyranny. Love is the guiding light to achieve these and therefore Leonore is not only an embodiment of womanly virtue, but also in her manly guise of Fidelio the embodiment of true humanistic enlightenment, through which freedom can be achieved.

BelCanto Arts stages Fidelio in the stunning Lorely-Hall, a masterpiece of 19th century architecture near the Schönbrunn Castle.
A cast of international opera singers will perform under the direction of celebrated stage director Annegret Ritzel together with the Chorus BelCanto and the BelCanto Arts Orchestra.
