St. Peters Church in Vienna:

The first St. Peter’s church at this place was built in the Roman encampment Vindobona (which is now Vienna) in the second half of the 4th century. It is believed that it is the oldest church in Vienna.

It was later replaced by a Romanesque church with a nave and two aisles. It is said to have been founded by Emperor Charlemagne around 792, but this has not been proven.<...br /> In any case, a church of Saint Peter in Vienna is first mentioned in 1137 as part of the prehistory for the construction of St. Stephen's Church, to which the parish rights of St. Peter should also be transferred.

In 1661 the old St. Peter’s Church burned down and was only poorly repaired. The decision to build a new church was made by emperor Leopold I. He had taken a vow to rebuild this church when Vienna was ravaged by the plague in 1679-1680.

The St. Peter’s Church we can see and visit now was built from 1701 to 1733 by plans of Lucas von Hildebrandt. It was the first domed structure in baroque Vienna.
By this time Vienna was already a sprawling city and there was not much space for a huge church. So it was built in a very compact form, with an oval interior housing that gives an astonishing amount of space.

The church was renovated in 2004 and makes an overwhelming impression on the visitor with its surprisingly rich interior filled with golden stucco.
St. Peter’s Church also became home for the Classic Ensemble Vienna. Their classical concerts are among the secret highlights of Vienna.
